Footnotes

The Real Thing was written by Tom Stoppard, and had its London premiere in 1982 at the Strand (now the Novello) Theatre. The play subsequently transferred to Broadway, opening at the Plymouth Theatre on the 5th January 1984. The original Broadway cast was led by Glenn Close as Annie, and Jeremy Irons as Henry. In addition to winning Best Play, The Real Thing won the Tony® awards for Best Actor (Jeremy Irons), Best Actress (Glenn Close), Best Featured Actress (Christine Baranski), and Best Direction of a Play (Mike Nichols), and was also nominated for Scenic Design and Costume Design.
