Fairport Convention: Dave Swarbrick's Violin, Made By Hans Lewicki,

German, circa 1900,
labelled Hans Lewicki, in fitted Musafia, Cremona case with four various bows and carrying strap, 23 1/2in (59.6cm) long

Footnotes

Provenance:
Offered by Jill Swarbrick-Banks.
This was Dave's main violin, used solely in the last years of his life and played up until his death in June 2016. It features on his last studio album, Raison d'etre, released in 2010. This instrument was the replacement for his custom made 'Hale-Bopp' red violin, made for him by Michael Burnham in the late 1990s, and named after the comet of that time. Dave sold the Hale-Bopp to the English folk musician Sam Sweeney in the Noughties.

Saleroom notices

Please note that David Swarbrick owned and performed on other fiddles in his later years, in addition to the present Lot. This Lot contains one bow (illustrated in the catalogue), not four bows.
