Diana Rigg and Jonathan Kent had initially asked Ted Hughes to translate Medea. He had not felt persuaded to do so, and regretted it enormously. Hughes wrote to Diana to say as much, so when the actress and director turned to stage Phèdre, it was Ted whom they first approached.
