Pieter van de Venne moved to The Hague in 1625 where he studied under his father Adriaen Pietersz., the well known genre scene painter. In 1639 he joined Saint Luke's Guild and later became a co-founder of the Confrerie Pictura. Only a small number of works by the artist are known, and most depict a simple spherical glass vase, a favourite motif of van de Venne. This vase, along with a similar pocketwatch, reoccurs in at least two other works by the artist, offered at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 1 December 2009, lot 22 and Sotheby's, New York, 29 May 2003, lot 32.
