Andrea Locatelli (Rome 1693-circa 1741)

An extensive landscape with figures resting amongst ruins
oil on canvas
137.5 x 97.5cm (54 1/8 x 38 3/8in).

Footnotes

The present work is one the more significant compositions of Andrea Locatelli, whose works were sought after by an international clientele, such as King Phillip V of Spain and Vittoro Amadeo II of Savoy, as well as such distinguished Roman patrons as Cardinal Alessandro Albani, Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni and the Barberini; in 1783 the Colonna family owned 80 of his pictures. In some of his landscapes he collaborated with figure painters, including Pierre Subleyras, Pompeo Batoni and Giuseppe Tommasi.

Although hitherto unrecorded, in terms of its ambition and particularly harmonious composition the present work might be compared to a pair of upright works, on canvas, 151.1 x 108 cm., which were sold at Sotheby's 25 January, 2001, lot 201 which Busiri Vici considered as occupying "... a special place in the catalogue of Locatelli's work: the pair belongs to the small group of landscapes which stand apart from the artist's normal production and assume the role of protagonist in the context of eighteenth century Italian landscape painting.' (see: A. Busri Vici, Andrea Locatelli, 1976, cat. nos. 173 and 174).
