A very large Meissen 'Limoges enamel' style vase, circa 1860

Modelled by Ernst August Leuteritz, each side decorated in the style of Limoges enamels with a scene in white on a dark blue ground, on one side Saint Barbara holding parchment and a quill and flanked by putti holding models of buildings, on the other side a patron saint of sculpture, possibly Saint Castorius, applied with scrolling snake handles, clasped in the mouths of gilt lion head masks, 59cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, indistinct incised model number (haircrack to one handle)

Footnotes

This rare model seems to have come in several sizes; two of these are illustrated in S & T Bergmann, The Art of Meissen Figures - Model Numbers A 100 - Z 300, Supplement (2018), nos. 2087 and 2088.

Saleroom notices

Please note that a small section of the snake coils on one handle are cleanly restuck, and that the flared foot is restored.
