A Sèvres hard-paste porcelain sugar bowl and cover (sucrier Boizot), circa 1793-95

Each side painted with a medallion of a classical god, possibly emblematic of War and Peace, on a gold-ground band with arabesque scrollwork between formal puce borders, the cover similarly decorated with classical masks and applied with a baluster-shaped finial with moulded palmette terminals, 11.5cm high, traces of gilt mark (restored)

Another sugar bowl and cover of this shape is in the Royal Collection, illustrated in Geoffrey de Bellaigue, French Porcelain in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, vol. III (2009), no.253.

Geoffrey de Bellaigue mentions and illustrates a drawing surviving in the Sèvres archives that is inscribed 'sucrier Boizot fait l'an deux de La Rèpublique française [1793-4] il y en n'a 3 autres audesous qui au lieu dune Volute Sur Le Couvercle Est un Bouton'. Two plaster models also survive and are illustrated by de Bellaigue, p.902.
