A porcelain figure of a Ukrainian man with a pipe, from the series 'People of Russia'

Gardner Factory, Moscow, late 19th - early 20th century
modelled standing and wearing a white shirt, blue 'sharovari' trousers, boots, and fur hat, and holding a pipe, on a circular naturalistic base, marked under base with overglaze red and impressed factory marks, impressed number '3' and overglaze number '7'
height: 25.6cm (10 1/16in).

Loosely based on the lithographs from T. de Pauly's Ethnographic Description of the Peoples of Russia, 1861, the series 'People of Russia' was produced by the Gardner Factory starting from the 1870s and included 50 ethnic types.
