By Elkington Of Birmingham, Circa 1880

Of circular convex form rising to a central blunt point, the outer surface decorated in relief with a Classical battle scene in a landscape involving horseman in combat, tented encampments, one aflame, a fortified town under siege, a river in the foreground, and a pair of dragons beneath a tree in which two owls and a bird are perched, all within scalloped recessed turned and roped borders followed by dome-headed lining rivets, and retaining virtually all its gilt and tarnished silver finish, the interior with applied oval plaque of the Victoria & Albert Department of Sciences & Art, and diamond-shaped copyright plaque of the Science & Art Department
64 cm. diam.

Footnotes

The scene probably represents the Battle of Dorylaeum of 1097 between the crusader forces and the Seljuk Turks

For the original, now in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (inv. no. 2.0.6157), see Museé De Tzarskoe-Selo ou Collection D'Armes De SA Majesté L'Empereur De Toutes Les Russies..., 1855, pl. XLIV
