A 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer's Sabre
By Henry Osborn, Sword Cutler, Bordsley Near Birmingham, Circa 1800

With broad curved fullered blade bright for over half its length and double-edged towards the point, the forte etched and gilt against a blued ground (some loss of finish) on one side with a cavalryman and crowned 'GR' cypher beneath a baldachin, and on the other with a trophy of martial arms, pre-1801 royal arms and motto, and foliage involving a rocaille, the back etched with maker's name and 'Warranted', regulation steel stirrup hilt with faceted rounded pommel and back-piece in one, ribbed leather-covered grip (chipped beneath the pommel), and complete with its buff-leather wrist-strap, in original steel scabbard (minor dents and light pitting) engraved with maker's details in an oval on one side at the throat, and with two split-rings for suspension
