A German Massive Hackbut (Hakenbuchse) Of 4-Bore
Dated 1755

With slightly swamped octagonal bronze barrel with iron-lined bore and chased over the upper three surfaces for most of its length with repeated rocailles, the fore-sight cast in the round as a waterfowl (back-sight missing), cast in relief with owner's coat-of-arms above a raised band chased with initials 'C.A.U' between the date, a band of engraved decoration behind, iron touch-hole and plain tapered tang, large flat bevelled lock and cock (old surface rust) retaining traces of engraved decoration: on wooden full stock (some old worming) with slightly flared butt flat along the top, carved with a scroll in front of the cheekpiece, and with a foliate apron (replaced) around the tang, the fore-stock pierced to accommodate the ratcheted iron recoil-stop, and bronze mounts comprising spur trigger-guard, butt-plate and fore-end plate: on a pair of wooden rests
