Samorodok is a Russian word for metal in its pure or natural state. The technique produces a textured nugget or molten surface by heating gold or silver to a near melting point before cooling it rapidly in water. The process was very popular in Russia circa 1890-1915 and widely used by goldsmiths producing jewels and objet for Fabergé during this time. This technique, producing a highly tactile surface, enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the 1960s and 1970s.
