EGYPT - ENGINEERING

Album of photographic views in Egypt, in particular relating to the building of the new British barracks at Abbassia in 1910, compiled by James Frazer Annan, an engineering contractor, approximately 130 gelatin silver photographic prints, mostly mounted between 3 and 5 per page, captioned in ink on the mount, the images typically 70 x 100mm. (some larger small format panoramas), contemporary cloth, covers detached, lacks spine, oblong 4to, [c.1910-1913]

An unsual album of photographs, compiled by James Annan (1887-1957) who appears to be have been working for the engineering contractors Henry Lovatt Ltd between 1910 and 1913 on the building of the new barracks at Abbassia, in the suburbs of Cairo. Approximately 50 views depict various stages of the construction, workers, and activities at the barracks (including Lord Kitchener presenting prizes at a Rifle Meeting, and the Coronation Ceremony for George V, 1911). Other images include the "passing of the Mahmal" during the annual pilgrimage from Cairo to Mecca (5), street scenes "in the Mousky district" and "among the Bazaars", the Nile barrage and dam, and "typical Mosque tombs".
