Signature ("Winston S. Churchill") in ink, beneath a black and white photographic reproduction of Frank O. Salisbury's Blood, Sweat and Tears portrait, depicting his subject three-quarter-length, wearing a spotted bow tie, his right hand resting on a book, a shield bearing the House of Commons portcullis behind, stamp 'A.C. Cooper Ltd./ Fine Art Photographers/...New Bond St. W.1.' on reverse, some damage, indentions and small holes, not affecting signature, 230 x 295mm., image 295 x 235mm., [post-1943]

Footnotes

Frank O. Salisbury painted Churchill on more occasions than any other artist during his lifetime, including perhaps the two most iconic wartime images of Churchill, The Siren Suit, and the present image, Blood, Sweat and Tears, painted at the height of the war in 1943. The title makes reference to Churchill's first speech as Prime Minister on 13 May 1940 at the time of the Dunkirk evacuations, in which said he had nothing to offer the nation but 'blood, toil, tears and sweat'.
