CHURCHILL AND ROOSEVELT

'The Atlantic Charter', broadsheet poster, the text of the charter in italic type in 2 columns, laid on a larger sheet of stiff linen, rolled with original fold creases still visible [OWI Poster No.50], 715 x 505mm., Washington DC, US Office of War Information, 1943--'L'Alliée d'hier. Avant la guerre: de grandes promesses. Pendant la guerre: Aucun secours... Après la debacle: Bombardement de villes françaises et blocus. Concluons', poster printed in blue, red and black, with a cartoon image of Churchill, central horizontal fold, 270 x 241mm., [c.1940-1945]

Footnotes

"The Atlantic Charter", as it became known, arose from a joint statement issued by the American and British governments on 14 August 1941, a statement of principles that later formed the basis for the United Nations Charter. The statement was the result of the secret meetings held by Churchill and Roosevelt prior to America's entry into World War II on ships off the coast of Newfoundland in August 1941.

The Vichy French poster features an unflattering cartoon image of Churchill holding a flower in one hand and a heart in the other, with a spider weaving a halo over his head and a wolf and sheep standing on either side.
