DICKENS (CHARLES)

The Haunted Man and The Ghost's Bargain, FIRST EDITION, wood-engraved frontispiece, additional vignette title and illustrations by Leech, Stanfield, Tenniel and Stone, publisher's red vertically-ribbed red cloth, stamoed in gilt and blind, slight soiling, spine bumped and with one small stain [Smith II:9; Gimbel A119], 8vo, Bradbury and Evans, 1848

Footnotes

First edition of the fifth and final Christmas Book. This copy conforms exactly to the description of the eighth copy in the Gimbel Collection, Podeschi suggesting that this issue was for rental distribution: the conjugate half-title and advertisement leaves are absent, and there is small blind-stamp of W.H. Smith Circulating Library on the front free endpaper. The page number 161 has the first numeral intact, whereas a later state has the figure damaged.

Provenance: W.H. Smith & Son Library, blind-stamp; Herbert S. Leon, bookplate.
