Footnotes

Women silversmiths were overlooked for centuries due to many scholars believing they were carrying on their families' or husband's business. It was not until the 20th century that it was realized many of these women were silversmiths and craftsmen in their own right. This tea caddy by Elizabeth Godfrey (English, 1720-1766) illustrates the sophistication and talent equal to any of her top male peers of the period. Throughout her career, she was commission by a number of nobles and high-ranking families, including the Duke of Cumberland.
