Footnotes
Piene was a founding member of the Zero Group in Düsseldorf, Germany. He was interested in kinetic and technology-based art, and from 1968 to 1971, he was the first Fellow appointed to the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) where he remained until 1971. In 2015 the Guggenheim Museum in New York mounted the first extensive exhibition of the Zero Group in the U.S. entitled Zero-countdown-to-tomorrow 1950-60s, reconfirming the importance and relevance of Piene's work for new audiences.
