A small Late Roman bronze column capital
Circa 4th-6th Century A.D.
Lead-filled, with Ionic scrolling volutes emerging from out-splayed acanthus leaves, supporting an abacus decorated with a central bud, a long iron tang on the underside, 4.9cm high, 4.5cm deep, 7.8cm high incl. tang

Cf. a Roman bronze spout in the form of a Corinthian column in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, acc. no. 00.13.16, and a Roman bronze column sold at Bonhams on 14 July 2004, lot 20, both comprising capitals of similar scales to the present lot. The exact functions of these model columns are unknown, though they may have served as furniture attachments.
