A Roman marble sarcophagus relief fragment
Circa 2nd-3rd Century A.D.
Depicting Cupid, the naked plump figure standing on a groundline, the club of Hercules resting on his left shoulder, a torch in his right hand with a himation draped around both arms, with a later head added, 54cm high

Formely private collection, Europe, 18th Century, based on the restoration techniques.

Cupid is shown carrying Hercules' club as a symbol that the power of love can disarm even the strong, while the extinguished torch signifies the passing of earthly pleasures.
