Footnotes

Provenance:

Private collection, acquired in the 1970s, until 2020.

It is thought that such vessels provide evidence of wine making in Iron Age Iran. The rounded body and elongated spout of such vessels would have served to filter the wine residue or dregs from any other such liquids. The pitchers were sometimes found in burials alongside beakers, perhaps for use in funerary rituals.
