A Phoenician green glazed composition plaque
Possibly Carthage, circa 5th-4th Century B.C.
Of Egyptianising style, composed of three horizontal registers, each with seven figures, comprising an upper band of figures of Pataikos facing right, a central band of fish, and a lower band of Bes figures, a ribbed attachment loop above, 4.5cm wide, 3.5cm high

Footnotes

Provenance:
Oude Kunst- en Antiekbeurs Delft, prior to 1992.
Private collection, Geneva.
Private collection, Europe, acquired from the above in 2006.

There is a similar, more complete, plaque in the National Museum of Carthage, Tunisia, illustrated in P.J. Ferron, 'Les guerres avec Rome et la destruction de Carthage', L'Œil magazine, vol. 299, June 1980, p. 21. The depiction of Pataikos in profile to the left demarcates this piece as being Egyptianising, rather than Egyptian, in origin, as these figures are always shown frontally in Egyptian art. Ferron notes that the number seven was sacred to the Carthaginians, and this amulet when complete was formed of seven rows and seven columns.
