Footnotes

It took two years to make, publicize, and sell Little Fugitive, the story of a seven-year old boy who thinks that he has shot his brother and then runs away to Coney Island. It was written and directed by my husband Morris Engel, his partner Kay Ashley, and myself...Eventually we found a distributor, the last one on our list, Joseph Burstyn. He immediately took it to the 1953 Venice Film Festival where it won the top prize - the Silver Lion of San Marco...the reviews were fantastic and the film played in almost five thousand thaeters in the United States, where it was nominated for an Oscar and included on numerous "ten best" lists. Our star Richie Andrusco appeared on many television shows and there were numerous magazine stories about the film. And in a 1960 New Yorker magazine interview, Francois Truffaut said that "The French New Wave would never have come into being if it hadn't been for Little Fugitive."
