Orson Welles (1915-1985)

Letter to Ruth Orkin from Orson Welles: and her response, May 28, 1941; and June 12, 1941
2 letters, the first from Welles on Mercury Theatre, Hollywood, letterhead, signed in ink with typed date and annotation "Dear Miss Orkin, Thank you for your interesting letter. I do hope you will like "Citizen Kane" when you see it. I see we share an idea and an enthusiasm for a "first-person" movie. The picture I came to Hollywood to do was based on just such an idea, but after completing a script and spending a lot of time and energy in the preparation of "Heart of Darkness" as it was called, I finally had to postpone it, as a complete "first-person" movie is at present too technically difficult. I still hope to do it, or another "First-person" movie, some day. I did the recording of what you heard in "Swiss Family Robinson" more as a personal favor to its producer than anything else. I would like to wish you luck and success in the book you are now writing;" the second, a carbon copy of Ruth Orkin's extensive typed response with her thoughts about Citizen Kane, dated June 12, 1941.
