In the 1920s Picasso had produced two series of etchings as illustrations for Balzac's Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu (lot 47) and Ovid's Metamorphoses, both of which deal with the relationship between artist and model and the challenges an artist faces in expressing the true nature and beauty of his subject. This was further explored in the Vollard Suite. Sculpteur et son Modèle devant une fenêtre depicts the artist producing a sculpture of his model, an image inspired by the story of Pygmalion, in which the sculptor falls in love with his creation, an appropriate analogy for Picasso.
