It was when Picasso was aged 24 and living in Montmartre that one of his original prints first appeared in a book, André Salmon's Poèmes (1905). For his second livre d'artiste, Max Jacob's 1911 Saint Matorel, Picasso collaborated with the publisher Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler who would go on to commission numerous other illustrated books from the artist.

Over seven decades, Picasso would produce more than a hundred and fifty artist's books, for Ambroise Vollard such as Balzac's Chef d'oeuvre inconnu (lot 47), Pierre-André Benoît, Albert Skira, and others.

For Picasso, illustrating books was never an afterthought; with his prolific output of graphic works, interacting with literary texts was a natural step. Story and image combine in the intimate setting of these books.
