John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895) was a renowned and esteemed scholar in Greek at Edinburgh and Oxford University, as well as a leading Scottish Nationalist of his time.
Regarded as an Edinburgh eccentric and often seen wearing plaid, a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a 'big stick'. A memorial plaque dedicated to Blackie and designed by Robert Lorimer, is installed in St Giles Cathedral.
