A second quarter 19th century white marble bust of George Granville, 2nd Duke of Sutherland (1786-1861)

Looking slightly to dexter on a turned circular socle, signed and inscribed to the reverse George Granville II Duke of Sutherland. 1834 J.FRANCIS SCULPT. LONDON, 53cm wide, 32cm deep, 76cm high (20 1/2in wide, 12 1/2in deep, 29 1/2in high)

George Granville, 2nd Duke of Granville also: Viscount Trentham until 1803, Earl Gower between 1803 and 1833 and Marquess of Stafford in 1833, was a British Whig MP and married to Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (see lot ...) Before becoming an MP, he fought in Prussia and Russia against Napoleon's French forces.

In 1845, he employed Sir Charles Barry to make vast alterations to Dunrobin Castle transforming the castle into a 189-room ducal palace.
