John Francis studied under Samuel Joseph and Francis Chantrey. Around 1830 he was granted the patronage of the Duke of Sussex and most likely through this connection became one of the favourite portrait sculptors to members of the Whig party, sculpting amongst many others; Lord John Russell, one which is in the National Portrait Gallery, London, NPG 678, dated 1832 and one in Windsor Castle, dated 1838. As well as, Lord Melbourne, best remembered as adviser and mentor to the young Queen Victoria, which was sold by Bonhams, Los Angeles, Fine European Furniture and Decorative Arts, 9 December 2013, lot 317.
An almost identical bust of Prince Albert looking to sinister and dated 1853 was sold by Dukes, Athelhampton House sale, 9 October 2019, lot 100.
