An Impressive Victorian silver-gilt presentation ewer and pair of goblets

by Frederick Elkington, Birmingham, 1882,
on four scrolling feet supporting a lobed base and helmet-shaped body, elaborately chased with cherubs and foliage, the scrolling handle supporting a cherub, engraved with presentation inscription detailing the gift to the Marquis of Stafford by the inhabitants of Newport on the occasion of his marriage to Lady Millicent St. Clair Erskine, 20th October 1884, 47cms high; and a pair of goblets, en suite, height 22.5cm, weight 100oz. (3)

Footnotes

This flamboyant ewer is in the English high rococo style established by Paul de Lamerie in the years 1736-1745. Although not copied from any individual example the very sculptural style of the ewer is clearly indebted to prototypes such as the ewer and dish bearing the arms of the Goldsmiths' company of 1741 and the ewer and dish bearing the arms of the 6th Earl of Mountrath of 1742.
