The present sketch depicts Serena, the heroine of his friend William Hayley's poem The Triumphs of Temper.
In Romney's finished oil paintings, of which numerous versions exist, including those in the V & A, London, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London and The Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston, Serena is shown enthusiastically reading Fanny Burney's Evelina by candlelight.
