Queen Victoria famously had a favourite King Charles Spaniel called Dash, which Victoria's biographer Elizabeth Longford famously described him as "the Queen's closest childhood companion". Although Dash was born in 1830, he wasn't given to the young Victoria until 1833, a year after this drawing (dated 1832) was completed so unlikely to be the same one, which is also depicted at being black, brown and white, but perhaps named after this Dash, given the Sutherlands close connection with Queen Victoria?
