Alonzo Barton Hepburn (1846-1922) was a prominent politician from New York and is best remembered for his work as the 8th Comptroller of the Currency in the United States from 1892-93 under presidents Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) and Grover Cleveland (1837-1908). After his time in office as Comptroller, he became the president of the Third National Bank of New York, then the Vice-President of the National City Bank in 1897 after the successful merger of several banks with the Third National Bank of New York, and then President of Chase Manhattan Bank from 1904 until 1922. In addition to his posts in the field of banking, Hepburn was also a prolific writer on economics and finance and wrote several books, including History of Coinage and Currency in the United States and the Perennial Contest for Sound Money published in 1903 and A History of Currency in the United States in 1915.
