Acquired from the above by the present owners, March 2005.

The present work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Childe Hassam's work being prepared by Stuart P. Feld and Kathleen M. Burnside.

Childe Hassam's early artistic training was heavily centered around classes at the Boston Art Club and private instruction from some of Boston's most accomplished painters at the time, such as Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl (1855-1932) who bestowed on him an interest in realism, and William Morris Hunt (1824-1879) who taught Hassam an appreciation for the aesthetic of the Barbizon School. This introduction to the Barbizon School would influence Hassam's works from this period. Hassam first traveled to Europe in 1883, likely when the present work was executed, visiting France, Britain, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands. Many of Hassam's works from this period, such as the present work, exhibit a soft palette of gentle browns, grays, blues, and reds here, creating an atmospheric haze reminiscent of Barbizon painters use of color. However, the brushwork that Hassam utilizes here is lighter and signals his shift to a more Impressionistic style. The present work was possibly included in the Williams & Everett exhibition Watercolors by Hassam in Boston in 1884, which included numerous works from Hassam's European travels of which several were done in Auvers-sur-l'Oise.
