John Sloan noted in his 1939 book, Gist of Art that "This rich, colorful picture was underpainted in oil monochrome enriched by subsequent glazings in varnish oil. Painted with speed and spirit in spite of the indirect technique." (as quoted in J. Sloan, Gist of Art, New York, 1939, p. 299)
