The sitter for the present work has been identified as Betty, the artist's wife. John Briggs' realistic narrative and figurative works are beautifully executed with technical precision. The carefully arranged vegetables, tea kettle, and pitcher on the kitchen table, the reflection depicted in the mirror, and the distant view of Betty sitting serenely by the window of their home are all visually engaging elements that lure the viewer into the depicted space. Briggs' use of color, the way in which he describes the architecture of the interior space, and his execution of light and shadow are masterfully accomplished. Kitchen, Figure in Cupboard is an exceptional and intimate example from Briggs early body of work that exhibits characteristic techniques that he expands upon in his later periods that critics and admirers continue to celebrate in his work.
