A PAIR OF HUANGHUALI HORSESHOE-BACK LOW ARMCHAIRS

Each with the sweeping crest rail terminating in outswept hooks above shaped struts, forming an elegant curve above the curving back-splat, the rectangular frame above rectangular beaded apron and spandrels, all supported by four square legs joined by stretchers. Each 82cm (32 1/4in) high x 72cm (28 3/8in) wide x 64cm (25 1/4in) deep. (2).

Compare with a related zitan low horseshoe-back armchair, Ming dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, vol.II, Hong Kong, 1990, p.52, no.A83. The author claims that although the original usage for such a low chair is unknown, it may have been a a sedan chair, or a special seat for a young member of the royal family.
