A very rare famille rose brushpot, bitong
Signed Wang Yeting and Wang Qi, cyclically dated jiazi year, corresponding to 1924 and of the period
The cylindrical body delicately enamelled around the exterior with a mountainous landscape, the foreground with large blossoming trees above pavilions, beside two sages with a boy-attendant carrying a qin behind them, further mountains in the distance separated by a river, with seal and signature of Wang Yeting, and another longer inscription of a section from 'Stele for Cao E', Cao E Bei, in clerical script with seal and signature of Wang Qi. 13.7cm (5 3/8in) high.

The present brushpot is a result of a rare artistic collaboration dated to 1924 between two of the most famous members of the 'Eight Friends of Zhushan'.
Wang Yeting (1884-1942), who painted the landscape on the present brushpot, was a founding member of the 'Eight Friends of Zhushan' and was famous for his strong brushwork on his landscapes. Wan Yeting was strongly influenced by the Qing orthodox master Wang Hui (1632-1717) and show Yeting's attempt to evoke the spirit of antiquity. His landscapes are characterised by gradual build-up of mountain forms and generous application of dots to denote moss and plants. Wang Qi (1884-1937), who painted the calligraphy on the present brushpot, was also a member of the 'Eight Friends of Zhushan' and was considered an outstanding porcelain painter and a doyen of the group. He was influenced by the calligraphic style of painting by Huang Shen (1687-after 1768), one of the 'Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou', although Wang Qi asserted his own individual style.
