THREE IMPERIAL YELLOW-GROUND KESI UNCUT FACINGS FOR A DRAGON ROBE

19th century
Comprising rectangular Imperial yellow-ground silk panels with a collar, pair of horseshoe-shaped cuffs and a lapel facing, all finely woven in kesi weave with delicate designs of five-clawed writhing dragons pursuing flaming pearls above rolling waves, five-coloured clouds, flames and bats, all on a midnight-blue ground, and an original Imperial yellow silk-covered paper mount.
The largest panel 82.5cm (39in) wide. (3).

The present edgings would have been made for an Imperial yellow-ground dragon robe, which would have been worn by the Emperor or one of the highest-ranking members of his innermost family circle, on the occasion of formal or semi-formal events. See a yellow-ground kesi dragon robe, circa 1885, illustrated in Heaven's Embroidered Cloths, Hong Kong, 1995, pp.236-237.
