The use of bamboo jackets and vests appears to date back to the Ming dynasty. They were worn as an undergarment to aid air circulation, which helped to protect the outer garments from perspiration stains during the hot weather. A nearly identical bamboo jacket, 19th century, is illustrated by V.Garrett, Chinese Dress. From the Qing Dynasty to the Present, Clarendon, VT, 2008, p.112, fig.211.
A similar bamboo man's jacket, 19th century, was sold at Christie's New York, 19 March 2008, lot 125.
