The signature is a formula used by painters with the names Muhammad, Muhammad Zaman or Mahdi. The date on this piece falls in the period of what Karimzadeh called Muhammad Zaman V. He is described through his works, mainly in his depiction of flowers and birds in the style of 'Ali Ashraf on lacquered covers and for his gold illuminations. His recorded works are dated between 1218 (1803-04) and 1242 (1826-7). (A. Karimzadeh Tabrizi, The Lives & Art of Old Painters of Iran, vol. 2, London, 1990, pp. 822-23).
