Footnotes

Provenance
Private US collection.

First appearing in Kashmir in 1680, moon shawls (chandar) are characterised by the central moon-like medallion, the spacious square field, and the quarter medallions at each corner. Inspired by early 16th century Cairne carpets produced in Ottoman Egypt, they were particularly sought after by the Royal Court in Japiur, Rajasthan.
