The Uttaradhyayanasutra is one of the canonical Jain texts, comprising the last sermon and utterances of the Jina Mahavira, essentially advice for the monastic community.
This page combines the fine detail of Mughal painting, in the central section, with the bold, flat colours of Rajasthani painting (or perhaps that of Gujarat, given the Jain subject). It appears to be a composite creation from different excised sections from the same album, with the river or pond and the two women added to a central composition of the birds and the fine floral borders.
For other examples from the same series, see P. Pal, Elephants and Ivories, Los Angeles 1981, p. 44, no. 28; and A. Poster, Realms of Heroes, New York 1994, no. 180.
