Footnotes
For a very similar depiction of the same subject, signed by the artist Fath Chand, see Oliver Forge and Brendan Lynch, Indian and Persian Court Painting, New York 2018, no. 20. This was one of a series of thirty-six ragamala paintings completed by Fath Chand and Faqirallah. There are six female attendants to our four, but the composition is strikingly similar, with the maidens performing the same functions in the same poses,
The text of the calligraphic composition has not been identified. It relates to hair and its significance and quality (soft, thick, where on the body, on the back, on shoulders or chest). The smaller text at lower left, resembling a signature, appears to be a catchword.
