Footnotes

This painting derives from a dispersed manuscript of the Razmnama, the Persian translation of the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The Mughals produced various copies: the original was commissioned by the Emperor Akbar in 1582. Other versions were produced in 1598 and 1605. The manuscript from which this illustration and text derives was dated AH 1025/AD 1616-17, and was commissioned by 'Abd al-Rahim, a literary connoisseur and general of the Mughal armies from 1584.

Other leaves from this manuscript are in the collection of E. Binney III (see Indian Miniature Painting from the Collection of Edwin Binney III: The Mughal and Deccani Schools, Portland, Oregon 1973, pp. 60-61, no. 35); also S. C. Welch, The Art of Mughal India, New York 1963, pl. 33, p. 74. Other examples appeared at Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 7th October 2015, lots 277 and 278.
