Footnotes

Long-necked bottles used for sprinkling rosewater or gulab over guests were produced from the early 17th Century onwards in gold, silver, and glass. Originating in Persia they gained immense popularity in India and were used as part of court rituals, most notably to welcome guests. The forms of the floral decoration on the present lot demonstrate the influence of European botanical prints which would have been in circulation at the time. For an almost identical sprinkler sold at Sotheby's see, Arts of the Islamic World, 24 April 2013, lot 219.
