Footnotes
The present lot is closely based on a mortar in the Royal Armouries which is believed to have been made for Tipu Sultan (XIX.119). Two such tiger mortars were captured in 1838 by the British at Fort Kurnaul. They were returned to England where they were stored at the Tower of London.
