A Lucknow enamelled-silver-hilted ram's head sword (shamshir)
India, 19th Century

the single-edged watered steel blade of curved form with flattened spine, engraved inscription-filled cartouche to one side, the silver hilt with pommel and quillons in the form of a ram's heads, decorated in polychrome enamel with perching birds and floral motifs, the wood scabbard clad in green velvet with enamelled silver chape decorated ensuite
