The lot is accompanied by the original 1963 Sotheby's sale catalogue, annotated by the buyer, with inserted receipt of purchase and cutting from The Times, Tuesday 12 February 1963, which mentions the sale of the piece: 'a third century A.D. head and shoulders of Buddha for £170 to an anonymous purchaser'. The stand was made by the India Department at the Victoria & Albert Museum shortly after the sale and the sculpture was photographed by Lionel Bell (two printed photographs included).
