Footnotes
The signature reads: 'Mir Mossaver [sic] 1330 (1911-12)'. (The name is written with a shaddah over the letter s, when it should be over the letter v/w). In the Roman alphabet: 'Mir Mossabeir [Russian spelling]'.
Karimzadeh records the artist as Sayyid Husain, known as Mir Musavvir (1881-1963), a Tabrizi painter. He studied in Russia, Italy and France and on his return, opened an art school and trained students. Karimzadeh records one work, a portrait of Mirza Yusif Khan, signed 'Mir Musavver Husayni', dated AH 1300/AD 1882-83. See M. A. Karimzadeh Tabrizi, The Lives & Art of Old Painters of Iran, London 1991, pp. 1354-56. However other accounts refer to him as Mir Husayn Arzhangi, and the location of his art school is variously given as Tabriz or Tehran. The date of his death is also given as both 1943 or 1963.
For another royal portrait by this artist, this time of Ahmad Shah Qajar, dated AH 1328/AD 1910, in a private Paris collection, see G. Fellinger (ed.), L'Empire des roses: chef-d'oeuvre de l'art persan du XIXe siecle, Lens 2018, p. 127, no. 122. There he is referred to as Mir Sayyid Husain Arjangi.
